Worshipful Mayor of Harrow, Cllr Salim Chowdhury, is Harrow’s 72nd Mayor and the borough’s first British Bangladeshi to hold the position. Dedicated to fostering unity, his theme for the year is ‘Unity,’ with a focus on bringing people together. His chosen charity is London’s Community Kitchen, supporting those affected by food poverty. Having moved to Harrow at the age of 17, Cllr Chowdhury’s passion for community service earned him a council seat from 2006–2010 and again from 2022 onwards. Currently representing Centenary ward, he also owns two local restaurants and other various businesses, combining his love for food with public service.
Councillor Salim Chowdhury is a distinguished leader and the current Mayor of Harrow (United Kingdom), whose journey exemplifies resilience, dedication, and community service. Raised in Birmingham, he moved to Harrow at the age of 17 in 1991, laying the foundations for a successful career and impactful life.
In 1999, he opened his second restaurant in Bedfordshire, marking the start of his entrepreneurial journey. A year later, he ventured into the car hire and body shop recovery business, diversifying his portfolio. His entrepreneurial spirit led to acquiring properties and building a robust real estate portfolio.
Councillor Chowdhury’s commitment to public service is equally commendable. As a police officer, he demonstrated dedication to community safety. He also chaired a traders association, served as a school governor, and acted as a trustee of an educational centre, showcasing his commitment to fostering community development.
Expanding his business portfolio, he established fine dining establishments, burger restaurants, coffee shops, and cafes.He also ventured into double glazing and banking, reflecting his dynamic approach to business.
A proud member of the Conservative Party, Councillor Chowdhury was elected as a councillor in 2006. At 22, after starting his first partnership restaurant and pursuing studies, he made a significant investment in his future by purchasing his first property.
His entrepreneurial success is complemented by philanthropic efforts. Two decades ago, he founded a self-funded charitable foundation, raising substantial funds, including £116,000 for NHS Charities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his leadership earned him the National Leadership Award. He and BBCA members provided over 33,000 meals to the elderly, vulnerable, and frontline workers.
As president of the British Bangladeshi Caterers Association, he represented over 8,500 restaurants, advocating for their interests and contributions to the UK’s cultural and economic landscape. On the personal front, Councillor Chowdhury is married to the Mayoress of Harrow, a dedicated teacher and they are proud parents of three children.
In 2023, he became deputy mayor and, in 2024, assumed the role of mayor. Through his professional and personal life, Councillor Chowdhury continues to exemplify leadership, compassion, and a deep commitment to his community, serving with passion and integrity.
