Theodoor Mannaert is a visionary entrepreneur who built a remarkable career in the textile industry, beginning in 1990. From securing major fabric deals in East Germany to expanding into Italy and Jakarta, he transformed opportunities into thriving businesses.

His ventures extended beyond textiles into wood manufacturing, real estate, and retail, establishing one of the Netherlands’ most prominent fabric stores. In 2015, he pivoted to tourism, launching a business in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Known for his resilience and adaptability, Theodoor continues to inspire global entrepreneurs with his innovative mindset and ability to navigate ever-changing markets.

From an early age, Theodoor Mannaert harboured a dream of making a mark in the textile industry. His journey, fuelled by ambition and perseverance, began in 1990 when he started working at a Jewish textile company in Weesp. However, his entrepreneurial spirit soon led him to venture beyond the familiar, seeking opportunities in unexpected places.

In 1991, he embarked on a daring expedition to East Germany with a school friend, inspired by the vast textile production once dedicated to the Soviet Union. Their first stop was the Thüringen in Berlin, a central organisation overseeing the reconstruction of East Germany.

Eventually, they arrived in Cottbus, where they negotiated, in broken German, the purchase of a massive stock of lining fabric—an invaluable asset for Dutch clients exporting to Africa. Despite having only 25,000 Deutsche Marks for a deal worth 100,000, they cleverly structured their purchase in multiple trips, creating an illusion of limited storage space.

As their knowledge of the textile landscape grew, Theodoor and his team expanded operations to Sachsen and Thüringen, acquiring an astounding 300 truckloads of fabrics and yarns annually. Partnering with two former Stasi operatives who possessed deep industry expertise, their business flourished, opening doors to even greater opportunities.

Not content with just textiles, Theodoor diversified into the wood industry by purchasing decommissioned railway car flooring planks. This venture led to the establishment of an oak flooring factory in Bulgaria, employing 59 people and producing high-quality parquet boards. Theodoor’s keen eye for opportunity extended to Italy, where he strategically acquired textile stock from prestigious brands, circumventing competitive restrictions through international transactions.

His global outlook took him further—to Jakarta—where he managed exports of European cotton fabrics while simultaneously importing polyester textiles. Back home in the Netherlands, his passion for high-quality fabrics culminated in the launch of a large fabric store in Alkmaar. Designers and fashion enthusiasts flocked to the store, drawn by the ever-changing collection of premium fabrics at unbeatable prices.

However, as China’s aggressive market strategies disrupted the African textile trade, Theodoor faced a turning point. Undeterred, he pivoted toward the tourism industry in 2015, launching a business in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic—an enterprise that thrives online to this day. Theodoor Mannaert’s journey is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of seizing opportunities in evolving markets. His visionary approach continues to inspire entrepreneurs worldwide.
