Dr. Manoj Kumar Krishnappa, a visionary leader in railway signalling, is the driving force behind Hitachi Rail STS India Limited. With 32 years of diverse experience spanning software, aerospace, and railways, he has established himself as a renowned industry expert.
A Computer Science graduate from Bangalore University, he also holds an Honorary Doctorate in Philosophy from KEISIE University and a master’s certification in Electronics from Wetzalar, Germany. As a fulltime director and country representative of Hitachi Rail STS, Manoj Kumar has played a pivotal role in transforming India’s railway infrastructure, pioneering innovations in metro and highspeed rail projects.

His journey has been marked by innovation, strategic foresight, and an unwavering commitment to excellence in rail technology. Manoj’s early career saw him associating with Ansaldo STS India, a leading player in railway and metro signalling solutions.
At the time, the company primarily handled electronic interlocking projects with Indian Railways. However, recognising the immense potential of metro rail development in the country, Manoj set his sights on expanding the company’s footprint in urban mobility. His perseverance and strategic planning bore fruit when Ansaldo STS India secured the prestigious Kolkata Metro contract, a defining moment that cemented the firm’s position as a significant player in India’s metro rail landscape.
In 2015, Ansaldo STS India underwent a transformation when it was acquired by Hitachi Rail STS, a Japanese railway engineering powerhouse with a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. Hitachi Rail STS had revolutionised global railway networks, producing its first steam and electric locomotives in the 1920s and introducing the world-renowned Shinkansen ‘bullet train’ for the Tokyo Olympics in 1964.
Under the new leadership and with Manoj’s expertise, Hitachi Rail STS India played a pivotal role in bringing cutting-edge railway technology to India, contributing significantly to mass transit, high-speed rail, and freight operations worldwide. Manoj’s efforts have brought multiple ‘firsts’ to India’s railway industry. Hitachi Rail STS India was the first to introduce Computer-Based Interlocking in 2002 at Chauklia station in Jharkhand, revolutionising signalling operations.
The company also pioneered Auto Block Signalling over an extensive 400-kilometer stretch between Kanpur and Mughalsarai Junction, enhancing railway safety and efficiency. His contributions have transformed railway infrastructure, making it safer, more reliable, and technologically advanced. For his remarkable contributions, Dr. Manoj Kumar Krishnappa has been the recipient of numerous accolades, including the ‘Business Icon Award,’ ‘Human Rights Journalist Award,’ and the prestigious ‘Kannada Rajyotsava Award.
His leadership has also been widely recognised in international publications, with Global CEO magazine featuring him for three consecutive years. Additionally, he was honoured among the ‘Top 10 Prominent and Great Personalities of 2022’ by Fame Finders Media.
