Dr. Demisha Burns, also known as Dr. D, Mama D, and Kamali, is a renowned social work leader with a Doctorate in Social Work from Clark Atlanta University. With over 20 years of experience, she champions diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), focusing on sexual and women’s health, HIV/AIDS, STIs, and mental health.
As a survivor of domestic violence and sexual abuse, Dr. Burns empowers marginalised individuals, groups and organisation through her businesses, Makn’ Movz’ and Sis Unleashed. Her mantra, “Stop trying to fit into a mould that you were meant to create!” reflects her advocacy for authenticity and selfdetermination.

A dynamic author, academic, and advocate, she leverages both personal and professional experiences to address some of society’s most pressing challenges on local and global scales. Born in the Bay Area, Dr. Burns returned home after earning her Doctorate in Social Work from Clark Atlanta University, specialising in Policy Planning, Administration, and Social Science.
She also holds advanced degrees from Boston University and Oakwood College. Dr. Burns embodies resilience. A survivor of domestic violence, rape, and molestation, her lived experiences fuel her unwavering commitment to systemic change. Her career includes serving as Director of Community Programs at a Youth and Family Centre in Oakland and as Policy and Advocacy Manager for a nonprofit focused on HIV and STI services for women.
She has moderated critical discussions with influential leaders, including Congresswoman Barbara Lee and California’s first Surgeon General, Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, addressing disparities in communities of colour, particularly in the wake of COVID-19.
Her advocacy extends far beyond national borders. She has brought hope to Rwandan genocide survivors through evangelism and spoken word and contributed to the construction of a church in Peru. As a former Deputy District Director for Congresswoman Barbara Lee, she played a pivotal role in think tank discussions and later consulted on a groundbreaking project enhancing the holistic and sexual health of African Americans in San Francisco.
Among her most revolutionary initiatives is the founding of Sis Unleashed, a pioneering platform that provides a safe, unapologetic, and empowering space for Black women in the LGBTQ community. This initiative challenges societal stigmas, reshapes narratives, and fosters an environment where women can show up boldly and authentically, without compromise.
